Another bonus is that with most williamsii plants, only a single specimen is required to produce seed. But Lophophora is a sluggish grower and can easily take a decade to reach flowering age under ideal conditions. They can be finicky to grow but don’t be discouraged, as dedication and persistence will result in healthy plants. This little cactus grows very slowly, but with fresh seed and the right supplies, anyone can grow Lophophora Williamsii cactus seeds at home and help preserve them for future generations. It requires a well-drained soil, dry conditions and infrequent watering. Lophophora thrives with other plants and does well in potted plants in large groups. It should also be grown in partial shade to avoid damaging the cactus from intense sunlight. Buy Peyote seeds in New South Wales, Australia.

Lophophora Williamsii Seed Growing Instructions

1 ê Fill seed trays or small pots with compost mixture and flatten mix gently. (Any plant mix purchased at your home and garden center will do. Premier” Pro Mix found at Rona’s is one of the best.)
2 ê Soak the compost in boiling water to kill parasites. After soaking, drain and cool for about an hour.
3 Sprinkle the seeds evenly over the compost mixture, then gently press the seeds down and level the top of the mixture with a spoon.
4 ê Cover with lids for seed trays or place pots in ziplock plastic bags.
5 ê Place under grow lights or in a well-lit window but not in direct sunlight as it can burn your plants. The temperature should be between 60 and 100 degrees F (15 degrees C to 37.5 degrees C).
6 ê If pots are placed in ziplock bags, water may not be needed for several months. If the seed trays begin to dry, spray to moisten the surface.
7 ê Seeds should germinate within 2 to 14 days.
8 ê When the plants are about six weeks old, start pushing the tops of the trays a little each day to acclimate the plants to the surrounding environment. If using pots in ziplock bags, start poking small holes every day for a couple of weeks to acclimate the plants.
9 – Keep the plants in indirect sunlight for about six months and then slowly let them get more light. Plants should be a lush green color if the light levels are right. If the epidermis turns red, it means they are getting too much light. If this is the case, raise the light or shade the window with a suitable material, possibly cheese cloth.
10 ê Don’t rush to replant your plants. Lophophora enjoy the company of others, so wait until they really fight for space.

Seedlings will germinate in three to ten days, but can and have germinated in as little as twenty-four hours. At first they will look like little green balls, but a trained eye will soon notice the cotyledons and first set of areoles.
